Greedy for Knowledge // Taylor Vice
"Be lowly wise:
Think only what concerns thee and thy being.
Dream not of other worlds, what creatures there
Live in what state, condition or degree,
Contented that thus far hath been revealed
Not of earth only but of highest Heav'n." (Milton 9, 173-178)
In Book 8, Raphael explains to Adam that he is not meant to understand everything about God's creations and that he should just trust in God no matter what. If we know about God and the eternal life in Heaven that awaits us, then we need nothing else. The knowledge of the small things in life does not matter in the grand scheme of things. We are humans on Earth that are trying to end up in Heaven. We need not know for certain about everything that is to come in life. Our faith and trust in God should be more than enough for us to be content in life.
This is one of the major flaws in humans. It is okay to doubt things in life, but our faith must remain in God. As humans we tend to want to know for certain everything that is to come, but God tells us that we need to put our trust in him and all will be okay. Waiting in Heaven for us is an eternity of happiness if we obey God and worship him. That is all we have to do to secure our spot in Heaven with Him, so why is it so hard to do just that?
I commented on Isabelle Ferguson's and Hailey Walsh's posts.
I absolutely love your perspective on this. The only thing I would add is that God has given us the capabilities and faculties to try to explore the mysteries of His creation. Just as you pointed out though God has given us the ability to understand the things that are necessary, He thankfully allows to dive deeper into His beauty. -Emmett Bryant
ReplyDeleteThat is a really good point. Most of the time we can get so upset and impatient when things get hard and we don't understand why. But when we look at the big picture, our eternity is secure if we obey Christ. So you're question of "why is it so hard?" is a great question. It shouldn't be that hard, but our flesh gets in the way. We really don't need to understand everything going on, because at the end of the day God will handle it better than we ever could.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. The fact that we as humans constantly want to know more and more about something is a major flaw that we have. I don’t think there is anything necessarily wrong with wanting to know, but if it consumes us to the point to were faith is no longer an option or it cause immoral actions to find the answer, then it is certainly wrong.
