Satan’s Twin ~Ashlyn Scism
Satan is pathetic and people overestimate his powers. He is not the king of sin like he would have everyone believe, instead, he is a slave to sin just like the rest of humanity. The one character that reminds me of satan is King Julian from Madagascar. King Julian believes himself to be the king of all he sees, however, he does not possess any real power. He is meant to be a source of comedic relief in the movie and it simply highlights the ridiculousness of his character. He is the self-proclaimed lord of the lemurs. Satan is also a self-proclaimed ruler. King Julian is a lemur and even if he is the lord of the lemurs, lemurs are not powerful creatures. So too is satan the lord over the fallen and the fallen are nearly powerless.
In Satan and Julian’s minds, they are the king and their rule extends to all of the earth. However, this is false because neither one of them have any real power. According to Milton, Satan has a demon army but since Christ has already conquered sin and the grave, Satan has lost. Julian is living in a delusion and once he steps away from his devoted followers he has nothing. So how come neither of them gives up the charade? Well, it is because this persona both of them have adopted is all they have. Without the support of their loyal subjects, they would be completely powerless.

P.S: I commented on Song and Elijah’s post.
On the one hand, Satan's powers are limited and do rely on his followers. However, he does wield power in this fallen world. While Jesus has defeated Satan, underestimating him or assuming he is powerless is a dangerous path that leads to ruin. Jesus won the war for us, but that doesn't mean we'll win every battle.
ReplyDeleteI like the comparison of Satan & King Julian, as it puts the position of circumstance that Satan is in through books 1 & 2 into perspective. However, and will all due respect, I would disagree with the powerless claim about Satan or his followers. They are powerless in comparison with Christ and his will, yes; but compared to the power any human has, Satan or any one of his followers has immense power, mainly due to a difference in nature. Interesting take though, good observation.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your comparison between King Julian and Satan. I of course found it quite amusing but also pretty reasonable as well. I like the way you described how this sort of ego is all the two characters had going for them. The only thing I would add is how, even though Satan doesn’t have power over what Christ has defeated, he still remains influential to this world. So, his power is limited, but I do not disagree with your post.
