Serving Freely—Lily Caswell

I’ll be honest, there were so many quotes that had a deep meaning to me but one of the ones that stood out to me the most was said to Adam by Raphael “Freely we serve / because we freely love as in our will / To love or not: in this we stand or fall.” (Milton, Book V, line 538-540) The footnote in my copy says that the angels, similar to mankind, freely serve God because they love God and aren’t compelled to do so either by God or their nature. I think that because the angels saw or at least had some kind of dealing with God on either a daily or regular basis, they loved Him because they knew He existed. Adam and Eve loved God and they would walk in Eden with God daily. If we’re in God’s presence, then shouldn’t we also love Him?

I feel like as Christians, we feel slightly obligated to love God because we’re Christians and it’s our “duty.” But shouldn’t we love Him because He first loved us? He loved us to the point that He became flesh and died on the cross and rose again three days later.

I commented on Justin’s and Emma Landry’s posts.
