Vain Attempts//Emily Otts

While reading Books 1 and 2 of Paradise Lost, I cannot help but think of how Satan's army's ideas of destroying God are all in vain. In the end of times, Satan and his followers will be cast into hell, to be tortured forever for their treason. Everyone that has read the Bible knows this. Even Satan and his followers know this. In Book 2, Belial acknowledges that any plan they could form, God would know about it: "Or who deceive His mind, whose eye views all things at one view?" (Milton 2.189-190). He suggests it would be better to accept the punishment they have at the moment than to go to war again and risk a worse punishment. Even Satan acknowledges how God reigns forever, although he syas it as if he wishes it were not true.

I will never completely understand why they still chose to go against God, knowing God would strike them down and punish them. I understand how since the creation of man, Satan wants to take as much of God's favored creation us, with him to hell. But going to war with God? Why in the world would someone do such a thing that they know will not work?

I commented on Hailey Walsh's and Haylee Lynd's posts.

  1. Hey Emily! You bring up a great point. Perhaps Satan and his minions know they're past the point of no return but are doing everything in their power to make God pay for it while they can. And take down as many of God's Children as possible in the process.
