Love Triangle // Raygan Boster
Esther is originally engaged to Mr. Jarndyce. Mr. Woodcourt confesses his love but Esther honors her word to Jarndyce despite what her heart wants, which Woodcourt respects. After some time, Jarndyce sees how much Esther truly cares for Woodcourt and he lets her go from the engagement. She then marries Woodcourt and they are loved by everyone they meet after their hard work. Esther states that this makes up for her looks and their lack of money.
I think that this love triangle is one of the hardest to get over. All three involved are so kindhearted and pure. Each one gives up their own happiness for the other. You can see how much each person loves another or at least respects each other. Woodcourt and Jarndyce both have a mutual respect for each other, and Esther loves Woodcourt but cares for Jarndyce and wants to keep her word, even though she knows she would rather marry Woodcourt. Both men love Esther more than they care for themselves and their own happiness. They show this through letting her go to the other man and taking the rejection maturely and quietly. It truly is the epitome of "if you love them let them go". No matter how hurt they were, they still only cared about their love's happiness. It was such a story of selfless love and so pure of heart. Woodcourt and Jarndyce wanted nothing but the best for Esther, even if the best wasn't what they could give her. All of that being said, it was the ultimate love triangle, and I could not pick any two to truly support 100% because of how they all truly loved each other. In the end, it worked out decently for everyone involved. I can only hope that one day people in this culture could handle things with such grace and understanding like they did.
I commented on Emma Kate Patterson and Emily Thullesen's post
This certainly was an interesting dynamic. At first, I was frustrated with Jarndyce for putting Esther in the place where she had to make such a life-altering choice. I was also frustrated with Esther for not pursuing Woodcourt who she obviously loved and who obviously loved her. In the end, I was surprised by Jarndyce who went to great lengths to ensure Esther's own happiness.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have forgotten that with Mr. Guppy, it becomes a love square! Obviously, Esther didn't love him back, and his reasons for wanting to marry her were incredibly shallow. But the attempted relationship, and the drama it caused, is there nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of respect for Jarndyce letting Esther go to her true love. This is definitely a case of “if you love them, set them free.” I also have a lot of respect for Esther choosing to stay with Jarndyce at first since she was already engaged. Their character hear is truly admirable.
