Information of Old and New: A PSA From Your Honor's Council

  Hello there! To our new folk: Welcome to Honors! To our returning folk: Welcome back to Honors! My name is Isabelle Ferguson, and I serve as the President of Honors. Abigale Bell is our wonderful Vice President. Lily Caswell is our marvelous Secretary. As we dive head first into the upcoming year, there are a few things you need to know and remember about the Honors program. This message is mainly for our new scholars. For those of you aware of all of this information, feel free to skip to the end of this post to find out who will be grading you this semester. 

There are no quizzes or tests in Honors. Grades are provided based on attendance/class participation, blogs, and papers (explicative and research). The papers will be addressed later in the semester. As we mentioned, there is a blog post due every week. We have listed the criteria for these posts below.

Criteria

  • Blog posts are due Monday at 11:59 pm, and comments are due Tuesday at 9:29 am. POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM LATE ASSIGNMENTS. 
  • Your name must be in your Blogger profile.
  • Blog posts should include at least one to two paragraphs on that week's reading assignment.
  • Blog posts should NOT be a summary or recap of the reading, but rather an application or observation from that week's assigned reading.
  • Do not include grammatical errors, slang, inappropriate language, or emojis/emoticons. Jokes and informal language are allowed, but only if relevant. 
  • If you quote the reading (you should), be sure to have a short in-text citation.
  • Include your name in the title of the blog post: "Blog Title Example ///// Abigale Bell" "Another Example -Lily Caswell"
  • You are required to comment on two of your peers' posts per week, though encouraged to comment on more! 
  • Comments should be engaging and not bland. THEY WILL BE PART OF YOUR WEEKLY BLOG GRADE. 
  • Once you leave your comments, edit your blog post to say whose blog posts you commented on.
  • Be creative! As long as your content is relevant to the reading, your blog can be about anything you want. Be sure to have a fun title.

The Plague in Everyone// Emily Otts

     In part 4 of the Plague , Tarrou tells Rieux about how he has had the plague forever. Except, this is not the same plague as the one ravaging the town. Tarrou speaks of how his father was a lawyer who believed in the death penalty, how he saw so many people support it and be comfortable about it, and how he had to witness the executions of prisoners. He explains how this sort of mindset is a plague itself, one Tarrou had been fighting for a long time. " That's why everybody in the world looks so tired; everyone is more or less sick of plague. But that is also why some of us, those who want to get the plague out of their systems, feel such desperate weariness, a weariness from which nothing remains to set us free except death" (Camus, part 4, chapter 6). The Thirst for Knowledge

     With Book Seven of Milton's Paradise Lost, Raphael is continuing his exposition on Satan's apostasy. The plan is to expose Adam and Eve to the wretched fate of those who cross God's will. The more he shed's light on the subject, however, the more Adam is inclined to ask for more information. He wants to know everything about the subject, as well as God and His creation.      However, while the taste of such knowledge leaves Adam yearning for more, there are boundaries. It is like a toddler eating a cookie... and eventually begging her mother for the rest of the jar. Is it a coincidence that the one thing Adam and Eve are not to touch is the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil? Most readers know how the story ends: these toddlers are never going to be content with a few cookies.
