Extra Credit: Another Sunrise (by Jake Heggie) ~Ashlyn Scism
There are truly no words to describe this performance. I went to the Lecture-Recital in Martin on a bit of a whim Tuesday night. I didn’t know next to anything about it going in and it was quite the experience.
While the historical lecture at the start of the was tragic and sad, it was the performance of the music that brought life to its history. It was devastating. The rise and fall of the soprano in the opening was heartbreaking. The descriptions of the events and the speaker’s memories were real and not romanticized like these accounts so often are.
What really struck me was the line sung in the song Another Sunrise: “A survivor is not a hero. A survivor is a survivor”. I had never thought about how people view “survivors” as these “heroes”, when in fact to be a hero is a choice. “Heroes” save the day so to speak, but “survivors” did what they had to do to see another day. To witness the setting of the moon and the rising of the sun.
