EXTRA CREDIT—Survivor—Lily Caswell

I went to the lecture that Dr. Guy presented Tuesday night. One of the things that stood out to me the most was during the song “Another Sunrise”. There was a lyric that said “A survivor isn’t a hero. A survivor is just a survivor.” That really hit me because I think sometimes we equate a person surviving something extremely traumatic (the Holocaust) as that person being a hero. I am by no means denying the fact that surviving something can be heroic. However, I know that I personally have the tendency to equate someone doing something heroic as a hero, and that simply is not the case. I do consider Holocaust survivors heroes though and here’s why: they are a testament to people’s ability to live even under extremes, such as what Krystyna Żywulska endured at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
