Resilience// Raygan Boster

The word that has stuck with me through everything is resilience. The one thing that stuck out to me the most in this first section of the book was all of the villagers resilience. Despite all of the turmoil and persecution they were going through, they never once broke. They kept the missionaries a secret and treated them with love and high respect. Even when faced with terrible punishments, they still never revealed them. Even when faced with the biggest rewards, again they never slipped up. I have the upmost respect for people like this all around the world. I cannot even imagine being faced with this. Also, when they were asked to spit on the crucifix and say horrible things about the Virgin Mary, they couldn't do it. This shows a true devotion to God and their Christian faith.

Also, the missionaries in the prologue showed this resilience as well. They were put through real and horrible torture, but still did not renounce their faith. To go even further, they even asked to be tortured for their faith. Christians in America have no idea the amount of strength and determination this takes to not only endure this type of persecution, but also ask for it. We hear this all the time, but we are so privileged to be able to have the freedom and the access to the Christian faith that we do. The only popular way we get "persecuted" is getting blasted on facebook or looked down upon by other people. And even then, people now renounce their faith because of it. I strive to show the resilience as these people in this book are showing.

  1. That was so inspiring. I've always heard stories about missionaries in other countries sacrificing for the faith. I, personally, do not think I am cut out for that type of torture. I am strong enough to be solid in my faith, but I would not be strong enough to ask for torture.

  2. I like that you put a word with actions of the villagers. The villagers were very brave and courageous in their acts and a good way to combine these two words is by using the word resilience.

  3. I'm excited to watch their stories progress. I think there is a lot to learn from the villagers and priests in sticking to ones belief's regardless of the social consequences. In America we face push back but never like these villagers face on the daily. -Samantha
