The Bible and Reason // Emma Kate Patterson

In the reading by John Toland the statement is made "That There Is Nothing in the Gospel Contrary to Reason." I find this is an interesting concept because he uses this to support the idea that no Doctrine in Christianity should be a mystery. Although I agree that the Bible is the word of God and the truth given to us by God I still believe that there are things in our Christian walk in which we must have faith. I think this is some what of a philosophical idea. If something is not contrary to reason can parts of it still be unknown? I think both ways can be argued. One can say that since none of it is unreasonable then it is not unbelievable and therefore not a mystery. One can also say that just because something is not unreasonable does not mean that it is to be believed without at least a little faith. This is a question that one must answer for themselves personally. It is something that can be debated based on ones own personal beliefs. Personally I believe Christianity requires both reason and faith.

I commented on Bug Olsen’s post and Emma Landry’s post.

  1. This is a great point. It is rather strange. The way Toland phrases it, there should be no mysteries, but there are, and there should be, as God has not revealed all to man.
